Back of House Manager

About the role

A permanent live-in Back of House Manager is needed for a property on Benguerra Island, Mozambique. The role covers all maintenance, project management, budget control and team leadership, with a strong focus on guest experience and sustainability.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee all maintenance on the property: plumbing, electrical (domestic and high voltage), refrigeration, buildings, carpentry, waste management, water plant, boats, vehicles, generators and projects
• Manage building and refurbishment projects and external contractors, and set the highest standards of maintenance on the island
• Ensure immediate attention to maintenance issues in guest areas and rooms, and keep preventative maintenance plans in place
• Manage the maintenance, security and gardening teams, train staff and recruit new ones with HR
• Control stock and tools, run quarterly tool stock takes, manage fuel and fleet statistics and keep expenditure within agreed budgets
• Drive recycling and waste management, source reliable suppliers and negotiate the best prices
• Handle performance through feedback and annual appraisals, keep an attendance register and ensure staff follow HR policies and disciplinary procedures

Required profile

• At least 5 years' experience as a Maintenance Manager in a similar-sized operation
• Extensive experience maintaining and repairing desalination plants and industrial generators (250 kVA)
• Mozambique experience highly advantageous; knowledge of Portuguese is an advantage
• Valid driver's licence and ability to drive a tractor
• Ability to handle pressure, work proactively, pay attention to detail and work well in a team
