Senior Mechanical Engineer – Surface Facilities

About the role

The Senior Mechanical Engineer will provide technical support to operations at Sasol’s surface facilities in Temane, ensuring safe, reliable and efficient performance of mechanical systems. The role bridges operations and engineering, leading small‑to‑medium improvement projects that enhance production, reduce risk and maintain asset integrity.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver day‑to‑day mechanical engineering support for compressors, pumps, heat exchangers, pipelines and utilities.
• Troubleshoot equipment failures, develop technical solutions and minimise production impact.
• Support shutdown planning, scope definition, method statements and post‑shutdown reviews.
• Collaborate with Asset Integrity and Reliability teams on vibration monitoring, lubrication and condition monitoring programmes.
• Review and optimise preventive, predictive and corrective maintenance strategies.
• Participate in root‑cause analysis and implement sustainable corrective actions.
• Identify, scope and manage small‑to‑medium brownfield projects, including equipment upgrades and modifications.
• Create and maintain engineering standards, specifications and best‑practice documentation.

Required profile

• Senior‑level mechanical engineer with extensive experience in plant equipment design, operation and maintenance.
• Proven ability to lead technical projects and work closely with operations teams.
• Strong analytical skills and experience in root‑cause analysis and risk mitigation.
• Excellent communication skills to provide technical direction and coaching.
