Deputy Programme Coordinator – Science

About the role

UNESCO is seeking a Deputy Programme Coordinator (Science) to support climate‑resilience initiatives in Mozambique and Zambia. Based in Maputo, you will help implement two regional projects that combine AI, IoT sensors, satellite data and community‑based solutions to address multi‑hazard risks in transboundary river basins.

Key responsibilities

• Support implementation and coordination of two climate‑resilience projects across the full project cycle.
• Plan, monitor and report on project activities, ensuring alignment with UNESCO’s disaster risk reduction priorities.
• Collaborate with government institutions, technical partners and local communities to deliver early‑warning and adaptation interventions.
• Track progress against objectives, manage stakeholder coordination and facilitate effective synergies between the projects.
• Lead Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning (MEAL) tasks, including data collection, analysis and reporting.
• Ensure compliance with project requirements and contribute to timely, high‑quality reporting.
• Undertake field travel and support implementation in challenging environments as needed.

Required profile

• Minimum 7 years of professional experience in project coordination, implementation and monitoring.
• Proven experience in MEAL, data collection, analysis and reporting.
• Strong organizational, analytical and communication abilities.
• Demonstrated capacity to work with government counterparts, technical partners and communities.
• Willingness to travel to field locations and operate in challenging settings.
• Experience in climate‑change adaptation, disaster risk reduction or early‑warning systems is a strong asset.
