Interview & Research Consultant

About the role

Conservation Synergies is looking for an experienced interviewer and researcher based in Maputo to support resilience and gender equity projects in Maputo and Limpopo National Parks. The consultant will collect, translate, and manage qualitative data from staff and local stakeholders to inform park resilience plans and a GESI framework.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct semi‑structured interviews, focus groups and informal conversations in Portuguese and local languages (e.g., Tsonga, siSwati).
• Adapt, pilot and refine interview and survey tools for the local context.
• Collect high‑quality qualitative data on corruption risks, organisational culture, trust, gender equity and social inclusion.
• Translate and summarise interview content into clear English while preserving nuance.
• Maintain ethical standards, including informed consent, confidentiality and secure data handling.
• Provide preliminary thematic analysis and field notes to support draft resilience plans and GESI framework.
• Assist in feedback sessions and co‑planning workshops, offering interpretation when needed.

Required profile

• Resident of the Maputo area with familiarity of rural socio‑political dynamics.
• Minimum 5 years of applied qualitative research or social analysis experience in Mozambique.
• Proven experience conducting confidential interviews on sensitive topics such as corruption, gender livelihoods and governance.
• Experience in conservation, natural resource management, gender equity or rural development projects is desirable.
• Excellent written and spoken English.
• Fluency in at least one local language (e.g., Shangaan/Tsonga, siSwati) with proficiency clearly stated.
