About the role

The WASH Officer will be based in Quelimane, Mozambique, supporting UNICEF’s efforts to improve access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene across Zambezia Province. The role involves implementing and monitoring WASH interventions in rural and urban communities, schools and health facilities, ensuring technical quality, sustainability and community ownership.

Key responsibilities

  • Support planning and implementation of water supply systems in resettlement sites, host communities and other settings.
  • Provide technical assistance for WASH in Schools (WinS) and WASH in Health Care Facilities (HCFs).
  • Implement sanitation approaches such as Community‑Led Total Sanitation, market‑based solutions and voucher schemes.
  • Conduct regular field monitoring visits to verify technical compliance, functionality and timely delivery.
  • Ensure quality assurance for boreholes, handpumps and solar‑powered water systems.
  • Coordinate with government counterparts, implementing partners, contractors and other stakeholders.
  • Assist with procurement and contract management, including drafting specifications, evaluating bids and monitoring deliverables.
  • Facilitate community mobilisation and capacity‑building for government staff, partners and local structures.
  • Promote hygiene and sanitation behaviour change and sustainable operation‑maintenance mechanisms.
  • Collect, verify and analyse WASH data, contributing to reports, situation updates and donor reporting.
  • Support needs assessments, feasibility studies, hydrogeological surveys and KAP studies.

Required profile

  • Minimum 3 years of professional experience in WASH programming, community mobilisation, sanitation and hygiene, or related fields.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Sanitary Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Rural Engineering, Civil Engineering or another WASH‑related technical discipline.
  • Fluent Portuguese (required).
  • Experience in humanitarian or development settings is an asset.
