Environmental Compliance & ESIA Coordinator

About the role
The role reports directly to the E&S Director and is responsible for overseeing environmental licensing and coordinating the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) for a large‑scale infrastructure project in the energy sector. The successful candidate will lead the development and continuous improvement of the Environmental Management System and ensure compliance with Mozambican legislation and international E&S standards.
Key responsibilities
- Oversee environmental licensing and coordinate the ESIA process for the project.
- Develop, implement and improve the Environmental Management System.
- Ensure compliance with Mozambican environmental laws, IFC Performance Standards and the Equator Principles.
- Provide technical environmental guidance to project teams and support capacity building.
- Develop and implement environmental compliance plans, procedures and monitoring systems.
- Coordinate permitting activities and acquire all required licences.
- Manage and supervise environmental and social consultants and specialised studies.
- Lead stakeholder engagement, public consultations and training initiatives.
- Act as the operational interface with lenders, regulators, local communities and other stakeholders.
- Monitor the quality, progress and timely execution of environmental studies and licensing activities, including travel to project sites.
Required profile
- Degree in Environmental Science, Natural Resources, Ecology, Biology or a related field.
- Minimum 10 years of experience in environmental management for large‑scale infrastructure projects.
- Experience with ESIA preparation and oversight, preferably in the energy sector or hydropower.
- Familiarity with project finance and international E&S standards such as IFC Performance Standards.
- Strong analytical, problem‑solving, organisational and communication skills.
- Proven ability to work independently and in multidisciplinary, multicultural teams.
