Head Mechanic – Mining Operations

About the role

The mining operation is looking for an experienced Head Mechanic to take full technical ownership of the reliability, availability and safe mechanical condition of its mobile equipment fleet. This is a hands‑on senior role where you will be on the tools, diagnosing complex faults, completing repairs and ensuring equipment returns to service safely and correctly.

Key responsibilities

• Perform hands‑on maintenance and repairs on heavy earth‑moving equipment and light vehicles.
• Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and driveline faults using a structured fault‑finding approach.
• Repair diesel engines, hydraulic systems, transmissions, final drives, braking and steering systems.
• Carry out auto‑electrical fault finding and repairs.
• Monitor undercarriage components and high‑wear items to plan replacements before failure.
• Respond to breakdowns and execute field repairs where safe and practical.
• Establish and maintain preventive‑maintenance schedules based on operating hours and manufacturer recommendations.
• Track machine downtime, availability and maintenance performance to improve reliability.
• Identify, verify and procure correct replacement parts, managing critical spares to minimise downtime.

Required profile

• Extensive experience as a heavy‑equipment mechanic in a mining or industrial environment.
• Strong expertise in diesel, hydraulic and auto‑electrical systems.
• Proven ability to conduct disciplined fault diagnosis and root‑cause analysis.
• Experience planning preventive maintenance and managing parts inventories.
• Hands‑on, safety‑focused attitude with a commitment to accurate documentation.
