SHEQ Officer – Maritime Safety & Compliance

About the role

As a SHEQ Officer you will ensure compliance with Smit Lamnalco’s Integrated Management System and relevant maritime legislation at the contract or regional level. You will help strengthen the safety culture, support continuous improvement and contribute to safe, efficient maritime operations.

Key responsibilities

• Implement and monitor compliance with the Integrated Management System (SLIMS) across the assigned contract, including internal audits based on ISM, ISPS, ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.
• Register audit findings and drive corrective and preventive actions to improve compliance.
• Deliver SLIMS familiarisation, shore‑based and onboard training and ensure crew e‑learning compliance.
• Develop and improve work instructions, procedures and SOPs, identifying opportunities to enhance SHEQ performance.
• Promote safe working practices through campaigns, toolbox meetings, safety alerts and regular communication with crews and stakeholders.
• Provide monthly SHEQ statistics and support reporting in line with company standards.
• Support emergency preparedness by conducting shipboard drills, debriefings and follow‑up actions, liaising with class societies and clients as needed.

Required profile

• Higher professional education.
• Minimum 2 years of relevant SHEQ experience, preferably in the maritime industry.
• Strong knowledge of international maritime and management system standards (ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISM, ISPS, MLC).
• Excellent communication and coordination skills to engage with vessel crews, managers, clients and external parties.
• Proactive attitude toward continuous improvement, training and safety promotion.

Required skills

• Implementation and auditing of ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 management systems.
• Conducting internal audits under ISM and ISPS frameworks.
• Incident investigation and corrective‑action follow‑up.
• Development of work instructions, procedures and standard operating procedures.
