About the role
The Stevedore Foreman will lead stevedoring teams during vessel loading, discharge and quayside cargo handling for the Mozambique LNG project. The role ensures safe, efficient operations in line with approved work plans and project requirements.
Key responsibilities
- Supervise daily stevedoring activities, allocating duties and resources according to the shift plan.
- Conduct pre‑shift briefings and toolbox talks in Portuguese and English.
- Coordinate vessel and quayside activities with vessel representatives, lifting teams, equipment operators and cargo tally personnel.
- Confirm work areas, access routes and cargo landing zones are prepared before operations begin.
- Verify personnel competence and authorisation for assigned tasks.
- Ensure cargo handling follows approved method statements, risk assessments and lifting plans.
- Coordinate riggers and banksmen with the lifting supervisor, maintaining clear communication.
- Inspect lifting accessories, remove defective items and ensure suitability for the task.
- Monitor cargo identification, condition, tallying and handover, reporting any damage or discrepancies.
- Manage cargo transfer to transport and lay‑down teams, ensuring safe traffic flow.
- Monitor weather and visibility, stopping work when conditions become unsafe.
- Maintain shift records covering cargo handled, personnel, equipment, delays and incidents.
- Provide clear shift handovers and follow up on operational and HSE corrective actions.
Required profile
- Fluent in Portuguese and English, spoken and written.
- Proven experience supervising stevedoring or port cargo‑handling teams.
- Experience supporting construction or project cargo handling in a marine terminal environment.
- Practical knowledge of rigging, lifting accessories, signalling and safe cargo‑handling practices.
- Ability to interpret cargo lists, loading/discharge plans and operational instructions.
- Experience delivering toolbox talks and implementing risk assessments and method statements.
- Strong team leadership, coordination and reporting skills.
- Ability to identify unsafe conditions, stop work and escalate concerns.
- Willingness to work on‑site in Afungi on a 75‑day on / 21‑day off rotation.
