International Consultant for Circular End‑of‑Life Management of Cold Chain Equipment in Mozambique

About the role

UNICEF is seeking an International Consultant to support the initial groundwork for a pilot project in Mozambique that aims to establish safe, environmentally sound, and circular end‑of‑life management pathways for cold chain equipment (CCE). The work will combine remote analysis with field travel over a four‑month period.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct analysis of existing cold chain systems and waste management practices in Mozambique.
• Identify opportunities for circular economy approaches, including reuse, refurbishment, and responsible recycling of CCE.
• Generate evidence and operational insights to inform scalable national strategies.
• Ensure compliance with environmental standards and relevant UNICEF, WHO, and Gavi guidelines.

Required profile

• Advanced degree in Environmental Engineering, Public Health, Refrigeration Engineering, Waste Management, or a related field.
• Minimum 8 years of relevant experience, preferably with work in sub‑Saharan Africa.
• Fluency in English; Portuguese strongly preferred.

Required skills

• Knowledge of cold chain systems or refrigeration technologies.
• Experience in waste management and environmental compliance, especially refrigerant and end‑of‑life management of cooling equipment.
• Understanding of circular economy or resource efficiency initiatives.
• Familiarity with UNICEF, WHO and Gavi CCE guidelines and international environmental standards.
